Tuesday was a historic day for Montenegrin football, and that was ensured by the youth team, who won first place in the Elite Round of Qualification tournament in Tbilisi, achieved great success and qualified for the European Championship.
The history of Montenegrin football was written, the golden boys became the first generation of football players to qualify for a major competition.
"The youth made us happy, going to the European Championship for the first time. I hope they opened the door for some more generations, primarily us," said Stevan Jovetić last night after the match with the Faroe Islands in Nikšić.
The hero of the victory over the Faroe Islands and the scorer of the only goal, Edvin Kuč, hopes that the seniors will follow the path of the younger players.
"I would like to congratulate our youth team on their historic success. We are all happy. This is a great, historic success for Montenegro. I hope that we will be lucky this year, that everything that was not in previous years will return to us and that we will also achieve historic success. The youth team has broken the ice, I hope that we will continue," said midfielder Nefčija.
The youth team completed the Elite Round of Qualifications undefeated - they drew with Slovakia (1:1), and defeated Poland (1:0) and Georgia (3:1).
"We watched and cheered. We are happy because a generation has qualified for the European Championship. The golden generation, everyone is happy. There are phenomenal players in that generation. We are waiting for them to come and be part of the first team," said Driton Camaj.
Lecce striker Nikola Krstović also sent a message to the youth.
"I sent them a message, congratulated them. We are proud of them. It's started - they qualified for the big competition first, I hope we will be second," said Krstović.
Montenegro finally welcomed a football team to a major competition. The generation that grew up with Goran Perišić, and was led by Nenad Vukčević through the Elite qualifiers to the Euros, wrote the history of Montenegrin football in golden letters.
"Congratulations, we followed the game. They made the nation happy. It was time for Montenegro to go to a big competition," said defender Igor Vujačić.
The European Championship is scheduled for June 13-26 in Romania.
