The idea, which has already been the subject of discussion within the UEFA Club Competitions Committee, aims to reduce the physical burden on players in an increasingly crowded calendar, reports Sport Klub.
Three key changes that are on the table.
1. Penalties instead of extra time
In the event of a draw after 90 minutes, matches would be decided immediately by penalty kicks, without an additional 30 minutes of play.
2. Home advantage in the second leg
Clubs that finish in the top eight in the league stage would have the advantage of playing the second leg of the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals on home soil. Currently, this advantage only applies to the round of 16.
3. "Protection of States" in the draw
UEFA is considering reintroducing a rule that would prevent clubs from the same country from meeting before the quarter-finals, to avoid early national duels that are less attractive to spectators and sponsors.
The UEFA Competitions Committee is expected to decide on these proposals at a meeting scheduled for May 30 in Munich.
If approved, the changes could take effect as early as next season.
