Canadian Olivia Smith has become the most expensive female footballer in history, after signing a record contract with Arsenal today worth one million pounds, or just over 1,1 million euros.
The 20-year-old former Liverpool player has signed a four-year contract with Arsenal.
This is a record transfer in the history of women's football, the previous one being £900.000, which Chelsea paid the San Diego Wave for Naomi Girma in January.
"It's a privilege and an honour to sign for Arsenal. My dream is to compete for titles in England and Europe and I'm excited to get started and contribute to that at Arsenal," said Smith, who plays as a striker.
Smith became a professional footballer in 2023, after playing at an American college, and joined Liverpool from Sporting for just over £200.000, the BBC reported.
Last season, she scored nine goals in 25 games for Liverpool.
Arsenal's women's football team has won 15 championship titles in England, and last season their second trophy in the Champions League.
