Another sad news has shaken Porto - George Costa, the legendary captain of this Portuguese giant, has died at the age of 54 after suffering a cardiac arrest.
"We express our deep sadness at the death of a man whose personality was an indispensable part of Porto's history," the club said in a statement from the "Do Dragao" stadium.
Costa was the captain, leader and defensive commander of the legendary Porto team that won the Champions League with José Mourinho in 2004, while his last job was as the club's sporting director.
"His legacy will remain forever etched in the memories of all Porto fans. You will never be forgotten, captain," the statement added.
Porto recently said goodbye to another former player - Diogo Joto, who died in a car accident.
As reported by Portuguese media, Costa felt unwell earlier today, after which he was taken to hospital, where he died. He first felt the symptoms at the club's training centre "Olival", and according to the newspaper "A Bola", he was given first aid by Porto's medical team, using a defibrillator on site.
He also suffered a heart attack three years ago, when he underwent surgery.
The legendary Porto captain spent 15 years at the club, playing 383 games and scoring 25 goals.
21 years ago, after Porto's triumph over Monaco in the Champions League final played in Gelsenkirchen, he lifted the most prestigious trophy in club football and ended his career just two years later.
