Police forces in the northwest of England will use DNA-tagging spray in an attempt to quell football fan riots this season.

Cheshire Police said today that they will equip officers with spray for all League Four matches in the region, starting on Saturday.

The spray marks equipment, clothing and skin with an invisible, uniquely coded synthetic DNA solution, which can be used for forensic evidence.

"It clings to skin and clothing for months," the statement said.

The spray is visible under ultraviolet light.

"We know that the vast majority of football fans are law-abiding, but unfortunately there are sometimes some who intend to cause trouble, which is why a strong police operation is necessary," said Police Chief Mark Roberts.

"I am confident that this new tool will make a real difference, helping to identify and deter criminals who attend football matches here in Cheshire," he added.
