Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio Davison Lopez Maciel broke the record for the most official appearances in the history of world football last night, previously held by former England international Peter Shilton.
The Fluminense goalkeeper broke the record in the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 1.391 against America Cali, in which he made his 2st appearance. The Brazilian goalkeeper finished the match without conceding a goal, as his team won 0-XNUMX.
Fabio (44) played his first official match in 1997 and has spent his entire career in Brazil, representing Uniao Bandeirante, Atletico Paranaense, Vasco da Gama, Cruzeiro and Fluminense.
He made the majority of his appearances for Cruzeiro (976) between 2005 and 2022, while he played 150 games for Vasco da Gama and 30 for União Bandeirante.
His record-breaking appearance on Tuesday was his 235th game for Fluminense.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Shilton held the record with 1.390 caps, but he claims he played 1.387 outside the national team.
But Fabio, who has never played for the senior Brazil national team despite being part of the team that won the Under-17 World Cup, is only now being recognised as the absolute record holder for the number of appearances.
