Portuguese football coach Jose Mourinho has been appointed as the new coach of Benfica, the club announced today.
Mourinho (62) succeeded Bruno Laz as coach of the Lisbon club, who was fired after the defeat to Qarabag in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The former Chelsea manager returns to coaching less than a month after being fired by Fenerbahçe following their elimination by Benfica in the Champions League play-offs.
Mourinho began his coaching career at Benfica in 2000, but only managed the team for 10 games before leaving the club due to a conflict with the president.
Since then, he has coached Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma and Fenerbahçe.
He won three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, three League Cups and a Community Shield with Chelsea, as well as two Serie A titles, the Champions League, the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana with Inter.
He won the title, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup with Real Madrid, the Europa League, the League Cup and the Community Shield with United and the Conference League with Roma.
Mourinho will have his first match as Benfica coach on Saturday, when his team plays away to AVS.
