José Mourinho's return to "Da Luz" was inglorious - Benfica drew with Rio Ave (1:1) in front of their home fans last night, and the Portuguese was angry after the match.
The home team only managed to break the visitors' defence in the 86th minute, when Sudakov scored. But in the first minute of stoppage time, a shock came - Andre Luiz scored and left Benfica without the three points they had already seen.
And after the match, Mourinho was bothered by a situation in the 60th minute, when VAR disallowed Antonio Silva's goal for trampling an opponent.
"The first half was weak. The second half was good, in line with our capabilities. We were dominant, aggressive, we had chances, we constantly played in the opponent's half and in an aggressive way. We also scored a goal, which was disallowed - if this is the new football in which a goal is disallowed because one finger stepped on another finger... I don't like that football, but if it's the new rule, we have to accept it. After so many attempts and creating chances, we scored a goal. Then there comes a moment when we must not concede a goal," Mourinho said after the match.
The Portuguese continued to comment on the trial.
"The match was the way Rio Ave wanted it and the way the referee allowed it and there's not much we can do about it. What we can do is play for 90 minutes like we did in the second half," Mourinho said.
He also explained that his team lacked width.
"The opponent played with four or five players in a line. It's obvious that a team that plays like that creates few chances. They didn't create anything, they scored one fantastic goal, kudos to that guy. But it's difficult to break through them," Mourinho said.
Benfica will host Gil Vicente in the next round, and after six rounds they are in third place with 14 points, four behind leader Porto.
