The Champions League was spectacular last night - 43 goals were scored in nine games, five red cards were shown, and six penalties were awarded, five of which were converted.
The reigning European champions, Paris Saint-Germain, defeated Leverkusen 7:2, in a match in which both teams received red cards (Andrich for the home team, Zabarnji for the away team), and the German team's player, Grimaldo, missed a penalty.
In another effective match, PSV defeated Napoli 6-2 after a comeback at home, while English teams also achieved victories - Arsenal over Atletico Madrid (4-0), Newcastle over Benfica (3-0), and Manchester City over Villarreal (2-0). City's Erling Haaland scored for the 12th consecutive match in all competitions.
Inter defeated Union Saint-Gilloise away (4:0), Barcelona outclassed Olympiacos at home (6:1), and Borussia Dortmund was better away from Copenhagen (4:2). Only the match between Kairat and Paphos saw no goals.
And only twice in the history of the Champions League have more than 43 goals been scored in one night. Last year, the final round saw 64 goals, but all 18 matches were played that night. Before that, on October 1, 1997, 44 goals were scored in one night.
If we take into account the average goals, last night there were 4,78 goals scored per match. A better performance was only achieved on October 21, 2014, when 40 goals were scored in eight matches, which is an average of five per match.
The teams that failed to score last night were Kairat, Paphos, Benfica, Saint-Gilloise, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal.
The most goals last night were scored by players from Spain - six. Footballers from England scored five times, from Portugal four times, and from France and Morocco three times each.
The Champions League continues tonight, with nine more matches on the schedule, including: Athletic Bilbao - Qarabag (18.45), Galatasaray - Bode Glimt (18.45), Atalanta - Slavia Prague (21), Bayern Munich - Club Brugge (21), Chelsea - Ajax (21), Eintracht Frankfurt - Liverpool (21), Monaco - Tottenham (21), Real Madrid - Juventus (21) and Sporting - Olympique Marseille (21)
