The English Premier League dominates Europe.
As the Champions League season heats up, the Premier League teams are proving to be the difference. Even though the reigning European champions come from France (PSG), the Champions League finalists from Italy (Inter), and the team playing the best football this season is from Germany (Bayern), the results and figures so far this season absolutely go in the English side.
The Premier League teams dominate in terms of "depth" - there may be others among the ultimate favorites to win the Champions League, such as Real or Barcelona, the aforementioned Bayern and PSG, but no one shows such diversity as the English. Namely, for the second time in the past four rounds, it has happened that five English teams have won in the same round.
Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Newcastle, Tottenham - all celebrated on Tuesday and Wednesday. Marko Jankovic and Qarabag made sure that it wasn't a total English domination, as they surprised Chelsea (2:2).
Never in history, until this season, has it happened that five teams from the same country have won a single round of the Champions League.
Maybe the boundaries will be pushed - for all six English clubs to win in the same round. There are still four "attempts" left.
Arsenal share first place in the table with Bayern and Inter, Manchester City is right behind, Newcastle and Liverpool are tied for third place with a few other teams, Tottenham is right behind them. Chelsea are not far behind (they share fifth place with Barca, Dortmund, Atalanta and a few other teams) and there is no doubt that all the Premier League teams will play in the knockout round in the spring, at least in the first play-off phase.
"I think in five years, when we look back on this period, we will be talking about the dominance of English teams, I don't see it any other way," says renowned Spanish journalist Guillem Balazs to BBC Sport.
"Bayern are playing really, really well, PSG will definitely have their moments, and I think Barcelona and Real Madrid are lagging behind. And I don't see anyone else but the English," he added.
Three times in history, English teams have met in the final: Manchester United - Chelsea in 2008 ("the Devils" won on penalties), Liverpool - Tottenham in 2018 (2:0) and Manchester City - Chelsea in 2021 (0:1), what is the probability that this will happen for the fourth time this season?
Perhaps it is too early to make such assessments, English teams have won 17 of their 24 games, scoring a total of 56 goals - 14 more than teams from any other country - while conceding just 17, a record surpassed only by teams from France, but with three clubs in the top flight compared to six from England.
"England is the Super League of Europe," the BBC noted.
