A small Catalan derby brought a change at the top of the La Liga table.
Barcelona lost first place to Real Madrid in a match that clearly showed that Hansi Flick's team has not gotten over the debacle in the Copa del Rey when Atletico celebrated 4-0 last Thursday.
Girona took the measure of the reigning champion - winning 2:1.
It was a duel of lowered guards from the first to the last minute, and when the situation on the field is so chaotic, the "blaugrana" are in big trouble.
Girona created chances, Barça created them too, and the outcome would probably have been different if Lamin Jamal had not missed a penalty at the very end of the first half with the score 0:0.
The young ace received a foul on Dani Olmo, then confidently took the penalty kick - not good enough, hit the post.
Barça, however, took the lead after that because in the 59th minute Pau Kubarsi with a great header brought an advantage that lasted only until the 62nd minute. Then Girona almost walked into the goal, and Tommy Lemar had the easier part of the job left - 1:1.
The controversy was sparked by a detail just before the goal when home team striker Claudio Ećeveri stepped on Jules Kunde.
Barça thus ended a three-game losing streak and is now in second place, two points behind Real, while Girona celebrated after three matches without a triumph and is 12th in the standings.
