Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestiani has been provisionally suspended and will miss Wednesday's match against Real Madrid, UEFA announced.
The Argentine is accused of racially abusing Vinicius Junior in the first leg of the Champions League play-offs, which Real won 1-0.
Uefa has decided to suspend Prestiani until the investigation is complete.
"We will appeal this decision, although we doubt that the appeal will have any impact," Benfica announced.
The controversial moment in the first game occurred after Vinicius gave the "royal club" the lead with a masterful goal.
Insults could be heard from the stands, and cameras recorded Prestijani throwing something at him, but no one could understand what because he had his jersey over his mouth.
The Brazilian immediately ran to the referee and told him that he had been racially abused, and the match was then interrupted for almost 15 minutes.
"Vinicius has the same problem in almost every stadium he plays at. The way he celebrated the goal showed disrespect for the opponent," said Benfica coach Jose Mourinho after the match.
The Portuguese's words did not go down well with the legendary Lilian Thuram, as well as Bayern coach Vincent Kompany, who said that "in this way Mourinho wants to divert the topic from the real problem in the world of football."
"Benfica reiterates its unwavering commitment to the fight against all forms of racism or discrimination. The values that the club fosters are seen in its daily actions, the global community, the work of the Benfica Foundation and important figures in the club's history, such as Eusebio," La Luz reported.
