Former Germany coach Joachim Lev He expressed concern about the security situation ahead of the World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada next summer, stressing that the political situation is casting a shadow over the biggest competition.
"We had discussions before the 2018 World Cup in Russia, as well as calls for a boycott before the 2022 tournament in Qatar. But playing in a country that is actively at war is even more dangerous. The political situation completely casts a shadow over the tournament," Lev said.
The man who won the 2014 World Cup with Germany spoke about these topics at an event dedicated to previous World Cups, which was attended by other former champions, including Rainer Bonoff.
It was Bonhof who further heightened the concern.
"I don't even know if we should play at all," said Bonof, to applause from those present.
Then he added:
“Canada is the only neutral among the hosts.”
However, he stressed that he was not in favor of a boycott, but rather caution:
“I am not in favor of a boycott, but security must be seriously considered.”
The president of Borussia Mönchengladbach also expressed his personal opinion:
“I have no desire to travel to Mexico due to the security situation.”
Despite such warnings, the German Football Association ruled out the possibility of boycotting the World Cup back in January.

"I don't even know if we should play in the World Cup at all. Canada is the only neutral host country, and I personally have no desire to travel to Germany because of the security situation," said former world champion with Germany Rainer Bonoff.
