Liverpool football club captain Virgil van Dijk has apologised to fans after the club's convincing defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals, British media reported today.
Liverpool suffered a heavy defeat (4:0) at the Etihad, leaving them without a chance of a domestic cup trophy, so they are now pinning their hopes on the Champions League.
Manchester City crushed their rivals in the space of 18 minutes, scoring two goals before and after half-time, after an even start to the match.
"I can only apologise to the fans for what we showed, especially in the second half," Van Dijk said, as reported by the BBC.
The Dutch defender pointed out that the team had intended to return to the match immediately after leaving the locker room, but that the opposite happened.
"When you're losing 0-3 here, it's very difficult to come back, but you can't give up, and that's exactly what happened at one point," he added.
Van Dijk stressed that the players had let down the fans, themselves and the coaching staff.
"The way we played in the second half must hurt everyone. It certainly hurts me," concluded the Liverpool captain.
