The Italian giants wanted the Montenegrin talent - and with a few months delay, the transfer finally came to fruition.
Andrej Kostic is a new Milan player, and he will first wear the iconic red and black stripes for Milan Futuro, the club's development team at San Siro.
The famous "Gazetta dello Sport" asked what kind of striker is coming to Lombardy. Ivan Brnović, the coach who introduced Andrej to the first team of Buducnost.
"If he's facing the goal, don't expect an assist, but the ball in the net in the next 2-3 seconds. He lives for the goal. He'll be attached to another team, but I think Massimiliano Allegri should keep him close to the first one," Brnović said.
Gazeta adds that the transfer happened despite attempts to prevent it, including those by Partizan vice-president Predrag Mijatović. Brnović has no doubt that Milan brought in a special guy.
"He lives for goals, has an innate sense of scoring goals and impressive strength in both feet. When Andrej is on the pitch, something is bound to happen – both ordinary and spectacular goals can be expected from him. For me, he is the combination of Filippo Inzaghi and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer," added the coach who won the title with Buducnost last season.
How did it develop in Buducnost?
"Kole, as we call him, has always shown an instinct for goal - both in the youth categories and in the Montenegrin national teams, often against older opponents. He made his debut at the age of 16 and in his first real season as a professional with Buducnost he scored four goals and helped win the title. The strength of the team and togetherness were key, and Kole played an important role especially as a wildcard off the bench, often deciding games. We won the title with a 24-point lead and it was a privilege to field young players like him, who later moved to big clubs, such as Vasilije Adžić at Juventus."
How would you introduce Kostić to Milan fans?
"Andrej is a wonderful guy – quiet, modest and well-mannered. On the pitch he has a huge work ethic and a constant desire to improve. He is fast and strong, he attacks space very well. He still needs to work on his play outside the penalty area and cooperation with his teammates. He reminds me of Inzaghi, but physically stronger. He is always on the verge of offside and does everything to score. As a wildcard from the bench, he also reminds me of Solskjaer."
Mijatović is disappointed about his departure from Partizan - did Milan do a good job?
"Milan did a great job, but time will tell. There were negotiations in December, but Mijatović did not want to let him go because of the higher price. Later, Partizan had financial problems and had to urgently sell the young player to get a Uefa license. The choice fell on Andrej and Milan got him for a significantly lower price."
How did you feel when you read that he was moving to Milan?
"I'm proud and happy for him. The credit goes to him and his family. It was emotional to watch him come to Milan to sign. I wish him the best of luck – he will progress and show his gift for goals."
Can it succeed in Italy?
"I'm not entirely sure the Italian league is ideal for him, but he has a killer instinct in the penalty area. If he can score goals there, he can do it anywhere."
Some compare him to Vlahović.
"There are similarities – he's strong with his left foot and good at jumping. However, he's more of a combination of Inzaghi and Solskjaer."
He will be in the development team, but should Allegri use him immediately?
"He has to prove himself in Milan Futuro first, but I say if I were Allegri, I would always keep him close to the first team. If you need a goal in the last 15–20 minutes, you can be sure something will happen."
What are Andrej Kostić's achievements?
"That's the hardest question. If the coach believes in him and fits into the team, he can become a star. I'm sure his work ethic will take him among the best strikers in Europe," Brnović concluded.
