Buducnost and Dečić are far away, until this Wednesday it seemed that Sutjeska was definitely heading towards a new title, and then Mornar emerged from the shadows, an unexpected hero for many and preserved the uncertainty in the Meridianbet First Montenegrin Football League.
The difference between the clubs from Nikšić and Bar after the clash at "Topolica" (Mornar won 2:1) is now only four points, and there are still many points and as many as eight rounds to go.
Milorad Peković's team, which ended a seven-match unbeaten streak (six wins) by the Adriatic coast, is still in a good position to bring the sixth championship trophy to the Bistrica region. On the other hand, Vesko Stešević's team has already shown that its good performances are not a coincidence and that, above all, it can dream of making history and its first trophy after a little over a century of existence.
After all, it was against their main rival for first place that they recorded three wins in four matches in the championship this season - Sutjeska only celebrated at the start of the season (3:0), after which Mornar scored two 1:0 victories and the last one in which they celebrated 2:1.
It is clear that there will be no more head-to-head matches between these two teams until the end of the season, so the championship race will be decided by clashes with other teams in the first league caravan.
Both Sutjeska and Mornar have the same eight rivals ahead of them that they will have to beat if they want to celebrate on May 24th when the curtain falls on the domestic league.
Because of this, it is practically impossible to determine who has an easier or harder schedule, but it is certain that Sutjeska will have the toughest away game against Petrovac, and Mornar will have the toughest away game against Budućnost pod Goricam.
The club from Nikšić has not been a national champion since 2022, and if it finally regains the title this season, it will move closer to its eternal rival, Budućnost, which has been the best seven times. Rudar and Mogren are much further behind with two titles each, and Zeta, Titograd and Dečić with one each.
In total, Montenegro has had seven different champions, and Mornar could be a new name that would go down in history. The club from Bar has made a breakthrough in recent years, from second division to Europe, was the vice-champion of Montenegro, played in the Cup final...
Perhaps the moment has come for the most important step in history, but Sutjeska will also be asked.
