Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has put forward a series of radical proposals to change the rules of football. In an interview with the New York Times, De Laurentiis stressed that football needs modernization in order to retain a younger audience.
"Football will lose the younger generations. The matches are too long, the children don't have the concentration for 90 minutes of play," said De Laurentis.
He particularly emphasized the break between the two halves of the game.
"Imagine that 15-minute break at half-time. Do you think the kid will come back after that? No - he'll go play FIFA," the Napoli boss pointed out.
That's why De Laurentis proposes a revolutionary solution. According to his idea, a half would last 25 minutes of effective play, with only the time while the ball is in play being measured, thus eliminating procrastination. De Laurentis also advocates the complete abolition of classic penalties.
"I would abolish yellow and red cards. Instead, a player would be sent off for five minutes for a minor offense, or 20 minutes for a more serious offense," said De Laurentiis, who is also seeking a redefinition of the offside rule, believing that the current system hinders the attractiveness of the game.
"You can't cancel a goal because of a few millimeters. There are too few goals, the game has to be more spectacular. The new generations are our gold. If we don't satisfy them – we will die," concluded De Laurentis.
