It is inexplicable to send a player off for that, said Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa after Real Madrid's painful elimination by Bayern at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Eduardo Camavinga spent 24 minutes on the pitch, and in just eight minutes he received two yellow cards that decided both the game and Real Madrid's season. The first was for pulling Musiala, and the second was shown to him by Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić for holding the ball after a foul on Harry Kane.
"Did the Frenchman make a mistake? Yes, because he shouldn't have taken the ball. But sending off a player for that (he carried the ball two meters and dropped it right next to the referee) seems like an excessive punishment."
"Marca", a newspaper loyal to Real, sublimates the reactions - of former referees, players, match officials, the media - and draws the headline: World noise: "It's absurd, one of those sending-offs that will go down in history."
"I think he gave him the second yellow because the Bayern players asked for it. Sometimes it seems like the referees don't play football or don't understand it," Arbeloa added.
The entire Real Madrid bench protested, aware that the season was ending, but to no avail. Three minutes later, Luis Diaz scored to make it 3:3 and send Bayern into the semi-finals. Real Madrid ends the season in April.
Alfonso Perez Burul, former judge:
"It is absolutely disproportionate to send a player off for this. He only held the ball for three seconds, and the referee needs to have more sense of the importance of the game and its flow. This is bordering on abuse of authority."
Pedro Martin, former judge:
"The referee overreacted and sent off a player for practically nothing. This will be remembered for the moment and the impact on the outcome. The referee had too much influence."
Mateu Lahos, former judge:
"The referee was confused, he didn't know it was a second yellow. It's clear that Kamavinga could have avoided the situation, but even for a first yellow at that moment it's too harsh. A big oversight."
Antonio Ridiger, Real Madrid defender:
"I'd better not talk tonight."
Eduardo Ituralde, former judge:
"At this level you can't give a yellow card for this and leave the team with ten men. A poorly managed situation, but Kamavinga shouldn't have taken the ball."
Jorge Valdano, former player and former general manager of Real Madrid:
"Camavinga's sending-off accelerated the outcome. A double mistake by the referee - both the booking and not knowing he was the second. The punishment is too harsh for a match like this."
L'Equipe, the famous French newspaper:
"The first yellow was clear, for Musiala's pull in the 78th minute; the second followed for conduct - holding the ball, which led to a sending off and a turnover."
Bild, a German magazine:
"After a foul on Kane, he was left with the ball. The referee first shows him a yellow card, then realizes it's a second one and gives him a red. Would he have sent him off if he had known right away? Doubtful!"
Steven Gerrard, Liverpool legend:
"The first yellow is understandable, but the second one for such a small thing cost the team dearly. One moment of recklessness decided the match."
Luis Diaz, Bayern striker:
"In my opinion, the referee was right. He didn't give the ball back, and we wanted to take a quick break."
Harry Kane, Bayern striker:
"The red card is clear. I think we deserved to go through, and Real Madrid shouldn't have conceded a goal because of a foul at the start of the game."
The Guardian, an English newspaper:
"The Frenchman already had a yellow card and gets a second one, unnecessary. After a foul on Kane, he clears the ball to prevent a quick takedown, and the referee gives a yellow card and then a red card without hesitation."
San, an English newspaper:
"He gets a second yellow card for holding the ball and is sent off after two cautions in eight minutes."
RMC Sport, French TV channel:
"The former Rennes player, who came on as a substitute for Brahim Diaz, received his first yellow card for a foul on Musial (78th minute). He immediately held the ball for a few seconds after the foul. Two consecutive yellow cards, in just eight minutes, cost the 23-year-old French international the sending off.
Real Madrid TV:
"Real Madrid are down to ten men. The referee... the referee has completely lost control of the game. The second yellow card is completely unfair. Camavinga takes the ball two metres away to try to delay Bayern's time-out. It leaves Real Madrid down a man and then, despite all their physical fatigue, the home team equalises. When Real tried to pull off a miracle, they conceded a fourth goal."
"Real Madrid, who not only matched Bayern at the Allianz Arena, but even led three times against the German team. They had the initiative, the control. In the first half, they were much better, and in the second they had clearer chances. The referee's decision was too harsh. Real Madrid showed character, they matched Bayern Munich."
