Liverpool Football Club has confirmed that its player Ugo Ekitike has suffered a serious Achilles tendon injury and will miss the rest of the season and the World Cup.
The English club made the announcement a day after France national team coach Didier Deschamps said that Ekitike would not play for the national team due to a serious injury.
Ekitike tore his Achilles tendon on Tuesday in the first half of the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain.
It is feared that the 23-year-old footballer could be out for at least six months, with the worst possibility being that he will be absent for nine months.
"Ekitike will be out for the rest of the club's season and will not be able to play for France at this summer's World Cup," Liverpool said in a statement.
Ekitike has scored 19 goals for Liverpool and France this season, and arrived at Anfield from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79m last summer.
