Barcelona coach Hansi Flick thanked his players and fans for their support after leading the team in Sunday's El Clasico against Real Madrid despite the death of his father, stressing that he will never forget the day.
Barcelona won the Spanish league title last night, their 29th in a row, after defeating Real Madrid 2-0 at home in the 35th round match.
The Catalan club announced the news of Flik's father's death on Sunday afternoon and expressed their condolences to the coach and his family. A minute's silence was held for Flik's father before the match against Real, and the players wore black during the match.
"I will never forget this day. It was a difficult day for me that started with the news that my father had passed away. I want to thank the team and all the people who supported us. I am very proud to have such a good team. Thank you for everything. Now I think we should celebrate," Flik said after the match.
Barcelona players threw Flick in the air during the title celebration.
"This is a family and they gave their all today and I'm really proud. It's incredible, in this stadium and in the classic against Real, to win the title," said Flick.
Barcelona striker Marcus Rashford, who scored the first goal of the Clasico, praised Flick for his strength.
"He showed his character by staying with the team at a very difficult time. It was very important that we gave 100 percent on the pitch because he makes these difficult decisions every day. I wish him and his family all the best," Rashford told the BBC.
The former Bayern Munich coach and Germany coach has won five trophies with Barcelona since replacing Xavi in May 2024.
With three rounds remaining in La Liga, Barcelona has 91 points, while Real Madrid is in second place with 77 points.
Barcelona will play Alaves in the next round.
