Sutjeska was the leader from the beginning of the season, finishing the first part of the MeridianBet First Montenegrin Football League in first place, but could have entered the season's finals in second place. On Saturday, in the 33rd round of the MeridianBet First Montenegrin Football League, the team from Nikšić drew away with Arsenal (1:1), so Mornar had a chance yesterday to take first place from the team from Nikšić with a win against Bokelj SBBet.
However, that did not happen. Vesko Stešević's team drew with Kotor (0:0) at "Topolica", thus missing the opportunity to take over the leading position from Nikšić, with whom they have a better head-to-head record. Sutjeska only defeated Mornar (3:0) in the first round, and then three defeats followed (1:0, 1:0 and 2:1).
There were three rounds, or 270 minutes, left until the end of the season. Sutjeska held on to first place, on April 8th they had a seven-point advantage over Baran, and were "on the verge" of the title, but then came the away game at "Topolica". Mornar then won (2:1), reduced the gap to four points and introduced a dose of uncertainty into the championship race.
The uncertainty turned into drama three weeks later, when Milorad Peković's team drew with Jezera (1:1) at home, and Mornar defeated Mladost Lob.Bet (2:1) away. Barani quickly reduced the gap to two points and put a lot of pressure on the leader, since Sutjeska announced on the eve of the season that they were only interested in the title.
And then the previous weekend was exciting. Sutjeska traveled to visit Arsenal, but failed to win - Nikšić led from the 52nd minute and a goal by Marko Mrvaljević, and Neđeljko Kovinić brought Arsenal a point.
Sutjeska played a match the day before, so Mornar knew what the duel against Bokelj would bring. In Nikšić, they feared that they might lose their leading position, but they received a huge gift from "Topolica", when few expected it - Mornar ended a streak of 11 consecutive wins, including the Cup, and played to a draw, so Peković's team will also welcome the next round from the leading position.
And the next round could perhaps bring some answers. Sutjeska welcomes Dečić on Saturday, while Mornar plays away against Buducnost. The team from Nikšić will face a derby with a team they have beaten twice in the league, but were eliminated from the Cup by Dečić. The team from Tušić have advanced to the final of the most popular competition, and are unbeaten in their last five matches, including the Cup.
On the other hand, Mornar will face Buducnost. Barani's last league defeat was on March 7th, when they lost away to Jedinstvo France.
In the last match, Mornar defeated Buducnost (3:0), and before that, one match ended in a draw (1:1), while the "blues" recorded a triumph at home on November 22 last year when it was 2:0. The upcoming match is not only of great importance for Mornar, but also for Buducnost, which is only three points away from the play-off zone and Jezera. Dečić in third place is as many as eight points away, so that position is almost unattainable for the "blues", while Petrovac in fourth position has three points more. And at this moment, there is a high chance that fourth place will also bring a place in Europe.
And after the next round, two more rounds follow: in the 35th, Sutjeska plays away against Mladost Lob.Bet, and in the last round they welcome Jedinstvo Franca, while Mornar welcomes Petrovac in the penultimate round, and in the last round they visit Jezera.
The next round could bring some answers, but also further complicate the championship race in which Sutjeska is chasing its sixth and Mornar its first championship trophy. And Barane also faces the Cup final against Dečić.
