Montenegro didn't have a real chance to get to know him, but he has long been highly respected in the country of one of the strongest national teams in the world.
Aleksa Latković, from Cetinje and a "ten" for Croatian Varaždin, was on our national team roster for the first time after coach Mirko Vučinić decided to reward him for his great season and call him up for two June test matches against Bulgaria and Slovakia.
Varaždin is one of the better stories this season in the Croatian championship, currently in fourth position, ahead of the three giants and the only teams that, along with Zagreb, were national champions - Dinamo, Hajduk and Rijeka.
Interestingly, the new midfielder for the Falcons has been scoring goals for each of them this season.
Latković is the best player of the club from northwestern Croatia, this season in the championship he participated in 14 goals (eight goals, six assists) for Varaždin, and his great performances were also followed by the media in that country.
"When Latković receives the ball, there is almost always a slight change in the atmosphere in the stadium stands because a move is expected - a dribble, an assist or a shot," wrote Sportske novosti.
"He arrived through the back door from Rudes and became irreplaceable. He scored against Dinamo, Hajduk, Rijeka and this season he is a key individual for the team from the Baroque city," Telegram announced.
His coach Nikola Šafarić also spoke with choice words about the former talent of Lovćen.
"Latković is doing a great job, he makes a difference and you can see that the quality is higher. When he is in the mood, our entire team is more dangerous. He can play, he can score, he can 'trick' the ball. I think there is still room for improvement," Šafarić pointed out.
The media in Croatia also covered his call-up to the Montenegrin national team.
"The call did not come by chance, Latković is playing perhaps the best football of his career this season and is one of the key players of the Varaždin team in an excellent season. With goals and assists, he confirmed his status as one of the most dangerous offensive players. His speed, directness and ability to resolve matches in 'one-on-one' situations have often made the difference for Varaždin this season, and his excellent performances have obviously not gone unnoticed by the Montenegrin coaching staff," Sportske novosti reported.
The Germanijak.hr portal emphasizes that the invitation is a reward for Aleksa's masterful season.
"Varaždin's number ten did a great job in pushing Šafarić's team towards European competitions. Great performances in the Varaždin jersey brought Aleksa Latković the greatest recognition of his career so far - an invitation to the A national team of Montenegro," added the aforementioned portal.
Latković has progressed through the junior categories of the Montenegrin national team, and now, at the age of 26, he will have the opportunity to wear his favorite jersey at senior level.
