Former president of the Italian Olympic Committee Giovanni Malago and Giancarlo Abete, president of the Amateur Football Leagues, are officially candidates for the new president of the Italian Football Federation as of today.
According to Italian media, the two were expected to be candidates to succeed Gabriele Gravina, but their candidacies were only formalized today.
The Italian Football Federation has until May 22nd to accept these candidacies, but according to "Gazzetta dello Sport", this will be just a formality.
The elections for the new president of the Italian Football Federation will be held on June 22nd.
According to Italian media, Malago will receive the majority of votes. The former head of the Olympic Committee already has the support of Serie A, the players' association and the coaches' association, and last night it was confirmed that he also has the support of Serie B.
Abete is currently the president of the Amateur Leagues and will have their support.
Serie A will have 20 delegates, or 18 percent of the vote, Serie B will also have 20 delegates and six percent of the vote, and Serie C will have 57 delegates and 12 percent of the vote. Amateur leagues will have as many as 99 delegates, or 34 percent of the vote, while the players' association will have 20 and the coaches' association ten percent of the vote.
Former Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina resigned in early April under political pressure after the national team failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third time in a row.
