Slot: Fans underestimate how much the transfer window can change things

Liverpool's season is one to forget, the "Reds" did not defend their Premier League title, they were left without a trophy, and last night they were defeated away from home by Aston Villa (4:2) in the 37th round of the domestic championship.

The Reds' campaign was unsuccessful, so manager Arne Slott promised fans after last night's match that next season would be better.

"I can understand that at the moment the fans don't have much confidence, nor a feeling that things can be much better next season. But I think they underestimate how much the transfer window can change things, how much a new start can bring, and I think we know very well what we need to improve," Slot said.

The Dutchman said after the defeat to Villa that he was missing nine players.

"I think one of the things we need to improve is also very, very, very obvious and I would like not to talk about it here, but you're practically forcing me to do it. If you're missing nine players who can start a football game, and almost all of them are first-team regulars or have been for most of the season, then when you add to that what you can improve in the transfer window and players who are in their second season in the Premier League, it will automatically add up to a lot more," Slott pointed out.

Liverpool, in fifth place, has four points and a game in hand over Bournemouth. The Reds host Brentford in the final round.

"I don't think the differences are that big. It's enough to do the right thing in a few situations and a huge opportunity for progress immediately opens up. It's painful because we needed a win or maybe two draws would have been enough, but now we know for sure that we need a win next Sunday if we want to decide our own destiny," Slot concluded.
