Danish doctor: Defibrillator brought Eriksen back to life

Five years later - almost identical scenes, the same drama, tears from teammates, despair in the stands and in the football world because of Christian Eriksen.

Fortunately, just like on June 21, 2021, the Dane survived after suddenly collapsing on the field during a friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine.

"Several Danish players are broken. They are in tears as they watch what is happening," Danish TV2 reported in a moment of panic.

Eriksen was carried off the field on a stretcher and into an ambulance. The match was not continued, Denmark won 2-1, but did anyone care after what happened to the midfielder who wore the Wolfsburg jersey last season.

The doctor of the national team, Morten Boesen, tried to explain what happened.

"In my opinion, it seems that his pacemaker triggered the shock while he was playing. I thought I saw him clutch his chest, then he collapsed. Very quickly, Christian became conscious," Boesen said.

He added:

"I think the device did exactly what it was implanted for - it brought Eriksen back to life," Boesen said.

Eriksen had a pacemaker implanted after suffering a cardiac arrest in 2021 during a European Championship match between Denmark and Finland at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

After that, he wanted to continue playing football, but he couldn't play where he wanted, but in leagues where it was possible. So he had to leave Inter for England, because the laws in Italy do not allow professional athletes to play with an implanted device. He returned to the Premier League, strengthened Brentford, then signed for Manchester United, and since September last year he has been at Wolfsburg, with whom he was relegated from the Bundesliga.

- The device will show what really happened. Now the important thing is that Christian is okay - said Boesen.

Denmark is not participating in the World Cup, and the coming days and weeks will answer the question - does what happened today in Odense mean that Eriksen will no longer play football? Or better said - is it worth risking his life again doing what he loves most...
