After more than seven years spent in the youth categories of Dinamo Zagreb, the time has come for Vuk Vlahović to take his first senior football steps.
Vlahović is the scorer of the historic first goal for any Montenegrin football team in a major competition. The talented 19-year-old scored in a match against Romania at the European Youth Championship last year.
Starting next season, he will wear the jersey of the newly-formed Slovenian first division team Brinje. In an interview for "Vijesti", Vlahović emphasized that his impressions upon arriving in Slovenia are positive. Grosuplje, the place where Brinje is from, reminds him of his hometown Kolašin.
"The impressions are still fresh. I've only been in Slovenia for a few days. Grosuplje resembles my native Kolašin - lots of forests and greenery, so I feel better. The Slovenian league is growing year after year and is excellent for the development of young players. I immediately noticed that they have made great progress with the infrastructure, good pitches and conditions, which is very important for the development of young players," said Vlahović at the start of the interview.
He had a great season with Dinamo's juniors. He played 28 games, scored seven goals and helped them win the double crown after a 23-year wait.
"The season behind me at Dinamo was memorable. A double crown after 23 years of waiting. There was a strong rhythm, we played some games worse at the start of the season, but later we picked up an increasingly better rhythm. In the end, we won both trophies. The goals came as a reward for my work. I'm also proud of the many assists, everything turned out great."
He was at Dinamo for many years, and was able to see firsthand the working system of one of the strongest clubs in the former Yugoslavia.
"I came to Dinamo as an 11-year-old boy and even then I was faced with a bit more serious work on the football school fields. There was less and less room for children's games, and more and more serious training and obligations. I went through a lot with Dinamo - trips, tournaments all over Europe and I saw that as a club we can compete with the strongest in Europe. Later, through the Champions League competition, we went far and played with serious teams. All in all, a lot of work and great experience was gained in those seven years. Dinamo is a great club and I have beautiful memories."
Of course, an essential part of the conversation with Vlahović was remembering that historic goal in the national team jersey. More than a year has passed, but Vlahović still has beautiful memories of that moment.
"The national team is something special for me. I guess because I've been out of Montenegro for seven or eight years. That feeling when you fly home to play for the national team is beautiful. The matches are filled with special emotions and I feel beautiful in that jersey. The goal at the European Championship still hasn't faded from my memory even though a whole year has passed. A beautiful feeling, really. I believe there will be more goals. That's the first one and it will be remembered a little longer. I want to score a goal for the A selection, I would perhaps prefer that," concluded Vlahović.
