Representatives of the Italian Football Federation met with Pep Guardiola to convince him to take over as national team coach.
The Federation's new technical director Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo traveled to Barcelona for talks with the current Manchester City manager, Sky Italy reported.
They spent three days in Catalonia, allegedly meeting with Guardiola and presenting him with the Italian national team project.
It is not known whether Guardiola wants the job, but the FA has taken concrete steps to hire him, Sky reported.
Other candidates include Roberto Mancini and Andrea Pirlo.
The federation has been looking for a coach since the departure of Gennaro Gattuso, who left the team after failing to qualify for the World Cup.
Italy missed out on their third consecutive World Cup, and Guardiola left Manchester City two months ago after 10 years.
