Real Madrid football club has initiated disciplinary proceedings against player Raul Asensio after he was convicted of drink-driving, Madrid coach Jose Mourinho said today.
"While the process is open, I see him as a Real Madrid player. He is injured and will be out for a few weeks. That helps me not to have to deal with this problem at the moment," Mourinho said.
Asensio has not played yet this season due to a muscle injury.
A Spanish court said that 23-year-old Asensio was ordered to pay a fine and had his driving license revoked for drink-driving.
"He is an exemplary professional. When he was in shape, no one trained harder or better than him. Now he is the first to arrive and the last to leave," Mourinho said.
"But a Real Madrid player is a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 12 months a year. Everything you do off the pitch still concerns Real Madrid. It still damages the reputation of the club, which is untouchable. I'm not happy, everyone makes mistakes, but accumulated mistakes are something else entirely," he added.
Separately from this case, Asensio faces charges for allegedly distributing a sex tape without the consent of the individuals involved in 2023. A trial in that case was expected this Sunday.
