The 2029 Europa League final will be played in Belgrade, at the new National Stadium, UEFA confirmed today.
The stadium in Surčin is being built as part of the EXPO project and according to the latest information, the works should be completed in early 2028.
It has been announced that the construction of the stadium, which will be located on an area of 121 hectares of land, will cost around 257 million euros. The capacity will be approximately 52 thousand seats.
A shopping center, a football academy, and probably a Football Association museum will also be built within the stadium.
"Behind the successful candidacy stands the months of dedicated work of the FSS team, which led the preparation of the candidacy, coordinated cooperation with UEFA and partners, and worked on the extensive documentation necessary for the organization of an event of such importance," the Football Association of Serbia said in a statement.
When it comes to the region and the organization of major matches, Skopje broke the ice - it was there that Real Madrid and Manchester United played the European Super Cup final in 2017, while Tirana hosted the first Conference League final between Roma and Feyenoord in 2022.
"The expertise, dedication and perseverance of everyone who participated in the process enabled Serbia to present a serious, comprehensive and high-quality candidacy to UEFA," it added.
As it is emphasized, the strong support of state institutions was particularly significant.
"The FSS expresses its gratitude to the Government of Serbia, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Sports, which brought together and coordinated the work of other ministries and state institutions involved in preparing the candidacy and providing the necessary guarantees," the statement said.
An important role throughout the entire process, as it is added, was played by the National Stadium project team, which consists of the Construction Directorate of Serbia, whose cooperation and expert contribution were of great importance in the preparation of the candidacy.
"The 2029 Europa League final will be one of the biggest international football events organised in Serbia and an opportunity for the new National Stadium to open its doors to the European football elite," the FSS said in a statement.
By acquiring a household, it is added, a new, even more demanding phase of the job begins.
"The FSS, in close cooperation with UEFA, state institutions and all partners, will continue preparations with the aim of Belgrade being a worthy host of the grand final in 2029 and for Serbia to once again demonstrate its hospitality, organizational ability and passion for football," the statement concludes.
UEFA has determined that the 2028 and 2029 Champions League finals will be played in Munich and Barcelona, respectively.
The Europa League finals in those two years will be played in Bucharest and Belgrade, and the Conference League finals in Turin and Budapest.
The 2028 and 2029 Women's Champions League finals will be played in Lyon and Cardiff, and the Super Cup final for footballers in Amsterdam and Astana.
