After the coach of the Croatian national handball team, Lino Červar, resigned, Veselin Vujović was mentioned in the Croatian media as his possible successor on the "cowboy" bench.
Vujović recently became the coach of Banja Luka Borc, a he says that it is not realistic for a foreigner to be at the helm of Croatia, although he would like it and does not hide it.
"Every time a coach in the area of the former Yugoslavia leaves the bench, the media start speculating with my name. Of course I'm glad that a lot of Croatian fans want me on the bench, it's clear that it flatters me, but I don't think anything will come of it. It is unlikely that Vuja will ever sit on the Croatian bench, but not because Vuja would not want to, but because the circumstances are such. I'd rather not talk about what those circumstances are, but I'll just say that a foreigner will hardly ever be the coach of Croatia," said Vujović, Index reports.
However, he points out that the formula with a foreigner on the bench of national teams is good.
"I wouldn't want to impose myself and advertise, but if we look at all the national teams whose coach is a stranger, they have all made tremendous progress. Sweden, one of the most trophy-winning handball nations, has a Norwegian as its coach. Germany, the country where handball was born, is led by Icelander Alfred Gislason, and Dagur Sigurdson led them to the European championship title five years ago. Serbia also hired a Spaniard as a coach and the results are immediately visible. In the qualifiers for the Euro, they won and drew with France. The stranger is deprived of the pressure of the public and all those games in and around the national team. He doesn't care about clans and intrigues. His job is to prepare the team in the best possible way and to impose his authority on the players. It's a shame that people in Croatia don't think about it," added the legendary Montenegrin.
