Romania and France won two tied titles each, Sweden did it once, but no one has ever done what Denmark's handball players managed - Nikolaj Jakobsen's team became the world champion for the third time in a row, after winning the grand final in Stockholm beat France 34:29.
The Danes started the match brilliantly, on the wings of young defenders Simon Pitlik and Matijas Gidsel, they led 6:2, then 12:7, but the "experts" returned by halftime (15:16).
They equalized at the start of the second half, but then 31-year-old Rasmus Lauge entered the scene.
The ace of Vesprem, who played only three matches until the final and did not score a goal from three shots, opened the net for Remi Debone and Vincent Gerard tonight. He made 10 out of 11 shots, and was even accurate nine times in the 2nd half, when the question of the champion was resolved.
Pitlik, the son of the former two-time Olympic champion as coach of Denmark's handball players, Jan Pitlik, scored nine goals, and the last one was spectacular, for an unattainable 32:29 with two minutes and 22 seconds left.
Then Niklas Landin Jakobsen saved Melvin Richardson's penalty, and Lauge immediately reached double-digit number of goals.
It sounds unreal that Denmark's defenders have shaken the opponent's net 30 times. In addition to Lauge and Pitlik, Gidsel (six times), Niklas Kirkeloke, Mads Mensa Larsen (two each) and Mikel Hansen (once) scored.
Nedim Remili was the most effective in the defeated team with six goals, Dika Mem scored five.
