Ninth place at the World Championships in Sweden and Poland was considered a failure by the Croatian Handball Association (HRS), which is why two main players in the field were fired - selector Hrvoje Horvat and field coordinator Lino Červar.
The new "pick" is the famous handball player Goran Perkovac, who as captain led Croatia to gold at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996.
Interestingly, Horvat and his professional staff were dismissed, and Perkovac was elected at the suggestion of Červar, but the HRS Board of Directors also dismissed him from his duties. In fact, he abolished the function he was covering.
Zoran Gobac, the long-time alpha and omega of Croatian handball, has also returned to the big door. He has been hiding lately, but now he has been elected as a member of the Board of Directors and will be in charge of men's handball.
