Germany and handball - always a special connection. Cologne with its Lankses Arena has long been a cult, and this great country has prepared another spectacle for everyone who loves this game and sports in general.
The European Championship starts tomorrow (Wednesday), and the very first day will go down in history, as a new record will be set for the number of spectators at one handball match.
The host of the first two matches between France and North Macedonia, that is, Germany and Switzerland, will be the football stadium "Merkul Spil Arena", which will be transformed into a huge handball arena just for those two duels and the ceremonial opening.
According to the media from Germany, it is expected that there will be more than 50.000 fans in the stands of this building.
Thus, the old record set almost ten years ago, also in Germany, when 44.189 fans watched the match between Rhine Neckar Leuven and Hamburg in Frankfurt, will go down in history.
After the first round, the matches of group A will be played in another great facility - "Mercedes Arena" in Berlin.
The big representative competition at the football stadium was also played in Lille in 2017 when almost 30.000 people watched the home team of France.
Part of the handball spectacle this January in Germany will be Montenegro, which opens the Euro on Friday against Hungary in the "Olympic Hall" in Munich.
The rivals of the "lions" will be Iceland and Serbia, and if the boys of Vlada Šola finish in one of the first two places in the group, a trip to Cologne and the temple of handball "Lankses Arena" await them.
