Denmark remembers a legend, a handball player who brought five Champions League trophies to Scandinavia while playing for two teams from that country.
Bojana Popović, one of the best handball players of all time and a symbol of Slagelse and Viborg, is returning to Denmark - this time as part of the coaching staff of that country's national team, one of the strongest in the world.
What is important is that Bojana will not leave Buducnost, but will remain as head coach, after receiving permission from the giants from Podgorica to work in the Danish national team at the same time.
"We would like to emphasize that Bojana Popović's primary job is as coach of ŽRK OTP Group Budućnost. Her engagement in the Danish coaching staff will not coincide with the club's obligations and challenges that await us in the new season, especially with appearances in the Champions League which begins on September 7," the Podgorica club announced.
Bojana will thus be a member of the coaching staff of the new Danish national team coach Hela Thomsen.
"Thomsen recently took over one of the best national teams in Europe from Jesper Jensen and signed a contract until 2028, and one of the first moves was to invite Bojana Popović to join her on the coaching staff. What an honor this has been given to one of the best handball players of all time is also demonstrated by the fact that for the first time in history, there will be a foreigner on the coaching staff of the Danish national team," added Buducnost.
The legendary Montenegrin player is returning to national handball.
"As a reminder, Popović was the head coach of the Montenegrin national team from 2021 to April last year, with whom she achieved great success - she won the bronze medal at EURO 2022."
As a member of the coaching staff of the Danish national team, Bojana will collaborate with the experienced Thomsen, who has a rich coaching career in numerous clubs, as well as with the Swedish and Danish national teams, and has won four medals at major competitions.
"For Bojana, this represents an opportunity to once again be part of the biggest handball scene and to contribute to the Danish national team's fight for the highest goals at the European and world level. With pride and sincere pleasure, Buducnost wishes her much success on the national team level. We believe that with her knowledge, experience and dedication, she will make a significant contribution as a member of the Danish national team's coaching staff," Buducnost concludes.
Denmark has won a medal in each of its last three major competitions - it won bronze at the 2023 World Cup, reached the final at Euro 2024, and won bronze at the Olympics that same year.
