In the Verde Hall in Podgorica, the score was 34:30 for Didier Dinar's team, who only turned the game around in the final minutes.
It was the "Lions"' first official match in six months, after the European Championship qualifiers were completed.
Montenegro was weakened - without Vasilije Kaluđerović, Stefan Čavor and Luka Radović, and Miloš Vujović stood out with seven goals.
Radojica Čepić scored six, while Branko Vujović and Miodrag Ćorsović each scored five times...
The same rivals play on Saturday, also at the Verde Hall.
