With a victory over Portugal (34:26), the Montenegrin women's handball team came close to winning first place in qualifying group 4 for the European Championship.
The "Lionesses" have reached their fourth victory in the group, and on Sunday (18) against the Faroe Islands in Podgorica, they only need to confirm first place, which brings an easier draw for the continental competition.
"I am satisfied with the outcome of the game, even though we conceded some goals at the beginning that we shouldn't have. The defense functioned properly and that led to the transition. I think we scored a lot of goals in transition, and we didn't have any problems in positional attack, although we did have some technical errors with one player. I am happy and proud that the youngest players got a chance and showed that they still need experience and time to adapt, but they still justified the trust and did what was asked of them with courage and determination," said coach Suzana Lazović after the match.
The "Lionesses" welcome the Faroe Islands on Sunday and want to end the qualifying cycle with a victory.
"I said from the beginning that the Faroese are an extremely demanding team with that seven-on-six game that they have put all the teams through. I believe that with our good defense, energy and goalkeepers, we should have no problems. We need to recover the players after this game and the long journey and then focus on the Faroe Islands," the coach emphasized.
Lazović expects great support on Sunday.
"I believe that the audience will come in large numbers. I think I will never forget the feeling I felt against Iceland in the last game in front of the home crowd. Maybe in the moments when we needed it most, they raised our energy. I repeat, I believe that there will be as many as possible to support and greet the Lionesses who have once again qualified for the European Championship," concluded Suzana Lazović.
Dijana Mugoša scored four goals against Portugal.
"We went into the match with our best effort, we respected the agreement from the locker room. We are very happy about this. I am glad that the younger players got a chance and that they took advantage of it. This all depends on them. The Faroe Islands will certainly come prepared to win, but this is our home, we are playing in Podgorica, I hope for a full stadium and that the audience supports us. We will prepare as best we can to celebrate together with the audience," said Mugoša.
