Representatives of handball associations and relevant clubs from the region held a meeting at which a significant step forward was achieved towards improving regional cooperation and the development of handball.

"It was agreed at the meeting that from the 2027/2028 season, full-format regional leagues will be formed in both competitions, thus opening a new chapter in the quality of the competition, player development and overall promotion of handball in this region," the Handball Association of Montenegro announced.

In the women's competition, the regional league will bring together two teams from five countries - Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia and North Macedonia.

In the men's competition, four clubs from Serbia and North Macedonia, as well as two clubs from Montenegro, are expected to participate.

As an interim solution, it was agreed to organize a shortened competition in the 2026/2027 season. The details and model of this competition will be further agreed upon at the next meeting, which will be held in Podgorica on May 20.

"The participants of the meeting expressed great satisfaction with the agreement reached, with the belief that regional leagues will bring greater competitiveness, attractiveness for the audience and additional impetus to the development of handball in the region. It was concluded that this is an important step towards creating a stable and high-quality competition system, which will benefit clubs, players and fans in the long term," the RSCG announced.
