A significant step forward for the future of regional handball was made today in Podgorica by signing the Agreement on the establishment of regional leagues in men's and women's competition. The Handball Association of Montenegro (RSCG) announced.
The agreement was signed by the handball federations of Montenegro, Serbia and North Macedonia, confirming their joint commitment to strengthening the quality of the competition, developing players and improving the overall handball environment in the region.
The regional men's league will bring together 10 clubs — four each from Serbia and North Macedonia, and two from Montenegro, while the regional women's league will have 10 clubs from five countries in the region: Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, Croatia and Slovenia, with two representatives from each country.
"This project represents an important step towards creating a higher quality and more competitive competition system, which will enable clubs to have a greater number of strong matches, additional development of young players and coaches, greater media visibility, as well as stronger commercial potential for handball in the entire region. This project is particularly valuable because it is a joint initiative of the federation and clubs, based on partnership, mutual trust and a shared vision for the development of handball in Southeast Europe," the RSCG announced.
The signatories of the Agreement expressed their belief that the regional leagues will bring new quality, additional attractiveness for fans and sponsors from the very first seasons, but also represent a strong incentive for the further development of handball in all participating countries.
"In the coming period, a joint league office will be formed, all competition and organizational models will be defined, as well as the competition start calendar. Today marks the beginning of a new and ambitious chapter in regional handball, with a clear goal - creating a modern, stable and high-quality regional competition that will be the pride of all participants and the entire European handball," said the RSCG.
