The Montenegrin Olympic Committee (COK) will continue to provide scholarships to Olympic candidates, even though the Tokyo Olympics have been postponed until next year, says the president of that association, Dušan Simonović.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Olympic Games will be held next year from July 23 to August 8.
Simonović reminded that Montenegrin athletes have not yet achieved the Olympic standard, but that he has no doubts that water polo and handball players will win the right to perform in Tokyo, as well as several national team members in individual sports.
"We expect a few more norms in the individual competition, and the COC, together with the IOC, will continue all the programs that were planned for this Olympic cycle," said Simonović for RTCG.
He also pointed out that he hopes that everything will be ready for the summer of 2021.
"The postponement causes certain costs and I'm sure that certain concerns are already being noticed by the organizing committee and the IOC, but it was inevitable to do it. What happened with the pandemic happened and there was simply no other choice. The IOC's decision is was fine," added Simonović.
Commenting on the humanity of Montenegrin athletes in the fight against the pandemic, Simonović said that they reacted brilliantly and showed that they love their country.
"The athletes confirmed that they are our true ambassadors in the world and with their donations, and not small ones, they significantly helped our health system, our country in such a difficult situation," concluded Simonović.
