Alex Zanardi, Italian motorsport legend and four-time Paralympic champion, was seriously injured in an accident that happened near Pijenza, a small town in Tuscany.
Zanardi was participating in the demonstration riding a hand bike, when, according to Italian media, he was hit by a vehicle.
He was taken by helicopter to the hospital, and initial reports indicate that his life is in danger.
Alessandro Alex Zanardi is a former Formula 1 driver (Jordan, Minardi, Lotus, Williams), but is better known as a CART series driver in the USA.
In 2001, after a serious accident on the track in Germany, he lost both legs.
He continued to engage in motor sports, with the help of prostheses, in order to fully devote himself to the Paralympics and in driving a hand bike won four gold and two silver medals at the Paralympic Games in London and Rio de Janeiro.
Because of his dedication and perseverance, Zanardi is one of the most loved athletes in Italy.
