Max Verstappen is the winner of the Monaco Grand Prix - a big day for the Dutchman, who celebrated for the first time on the streets of Monte Carlo and for the first time in his career reached the leading position in the general classification of Formula 1.
Behind the Red Bull driver was Carlos Sainz junior in Ferrari (8,968 seconds behind), while Lando Norris in McLaren was third (19,427 seconds behind).
Ferrari had a great chance in the street race of Monte Carlo, as the local driver Charles Leclerc had the pole position, but did not take part due to a fault in the gearbox of the Scuderia car.
Red Bull driver Sergio Perez took fourth place, fifth was Aston Martin driver Sebastian Vettel, and sixth was Pierre Gasly from the Alfa Tauri team.
Defending champion, British Lewis Hamilton in Mercedes was only seventh, although he received an additional point for the fastest lap.
Verstappen has 105 points, four more than Hamilton.
After the resignation of Leclerc, the drivers remained in their positions, Verstappen had an open road and kept the lead after the attack of Bottas, and Sainz, Norris, Gasly and Hamilton drove behind.
By the sixth lap, Verstappen had an advantage of 1,4 seconds over Bottas, who soon drove the fastest lap and reduced the gap to one second.
The Dutchman maintained his lead with safe driving, at the end of the 11th lap he increased his advantage over Bottas to two seconds, and in the 24th lap he had a 4,5 second advantage over the Mercedes driver.
He went to change tires on lap 34, the mechanics did a great job, by two seconds, and the Dutchman returned to the track in second behind teammate Peres.
Peres pitted two laps later, Verstappen returned to first place, increasing his advantage, and the famous American tennis player Serena Williams waved the black and white flag at the finish line and marked the end of the race.
The next race in the championship is scheduled for the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan on June 6.
