President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, at the end of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, expressed his "concern" about the worse results of French athletes three years before the start of the Games in Paris, AFP reported today.
In Tokyo, France took overall eighth place with 33 medals, seven short of the goal that was set, and nine short of the record performance in Rio 2016, when 42 medals were won.
"In Tokyo, Thomas Bach expressed the IOC's concern regarding the results of the French athletes, and regarding the competition in Paris. He confirms that the Games are successful when the athletes of the host country achieve excellent results," according to the preparatory document of the National Sports Agency there (ANS ).
During a reception for medal winners at the Elysée Palace on September 13, French President Emmanuel Macron "called on the athletes to do much more at the Paris Games".
"The results are not what we expected. We have to be among the five best in the world, and the success of the Games depends on the success of our athletes," Macron said at the time.
The Olympic Games in Paris will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
