Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal (22), a member of the INEOS Grenadiers team, the current winner of the Giro d'Italia and the champion of the Tour d'France in 2019, will have to undergo another operation on his spine following a severe fall he suffered last week during training.
Bernal hit a stopped bus near Bogotá, and in the fall he suffered injuries to his spine, legs and chest.
Immediately after arriving at the hospital, Bernal was operated on, and after a new control performed yesterday, it was confirmed that another one is needed.
"After progress in recovery, new scans have shown that another operation is needed. It will speed up the rehabilitation process during which the patient shows progress," announced the hospital in Bogota where Bernal is recovering.
Bernal wrote in a social media post this past weekend that he had a 95 percent chance of becoming a paraplegic as a result of the fall.
After the announcement of the new surgery, there is speculation that he will never be able to ride a bike again, and that there is indeed a possibility that he will remain immobile.
