The first medal for Montenegro at the 19th Mediterranean Games in Oran is silver.
Milena Jovanović, a karateka from Omladinc from Podgorica, was defeated by the Greek Kirjaka Kidonaki 68:2 in the final of the category over 1 kilograms.
At the start, Jovanović defeated the Egyptian Mena Okila 3:2, and then in the quarterfinals the current world champion, the Spanish Maria Torres, by as much as 5:0, and in the semi-finals, she also defeated Žemi Sehin from Tunisia by overriding the referee's vote.
In the final, however, she could not overcome the Greek woman, who won bronze last month at the European Championship in Gaziantep, Turkey.
In the quarterfinals, Kidonaki defeated the European champion, Ivana Perović from Serbia, by overriding the judges' vote. Interestingly, this is how their duel in Gaziantep also ended, also in the quarter-finals, but then the triumph was awarded to Perović.
Another Montenegrin representative in karate, Nikola Malović, defeated Meris Muhović from BiH in the 1st round, but then lost to Ivan Kvesić in the quarterfinals.
As the Croat did not enter the final, the competitor from Onogošt Nikšić did not have a chance to claim bronze in the repechage.
