Two-time back-to-back Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen, who had stomach problems for the first two weeks, said today that he is not yet recovered ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.

The Dutch driver added that he felt bad two weeks ago, just before leaving for Saudi Arabia.

"At home I was really, really sick and I could barely walk. When I got to Jeddah I thought it was behind me... but as soon as I got in the car for the first free practice I felt like I needed two laps just to be able to to breathe normally," Verstappen said at the press conference.

Verstappen finished the race for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in second place, behind teammate Sergio Peres.

He said that he had disturbances throughout the weekend.

"It was one of the first races where I felt a physical limitation and it was very frustrating," said the 25-year-old driver.

Verstappen leads the championship with 44 points, Peres is second with a point less, while Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso is third with 30 points.

The race weekend in Australia starts on the night between Thursday and Friday with the first free practice (3.30).

The race for the Australian Grand Prix takes place on Sunday from 7.00.
