Tragedy at the Cycling Tour of Switzerland - Gino Mader, a 26-year-old competitor from that country, died after falling during the fifth stage, which was run on Thursday.
As the BBC reports, the accident occurred when the Bahraini cyclist collided at high speed with the American Magnus Sheffield (21) and then ended up in a ravine by the side of the road. Everything happened on the descent from the Albula pass.
He was resuscitated at the scene before being taken to a hospital in Hur, where he died a day later.
"Gino was an outstanding athlete, an example of determination, a valued member of our team and the entire cycling community," Madero's team said. "His talent, dedication and passion for the sport inspired us all."
The organizers of the Run around Switzerland said in a statement that they were "heartbroken".
The other cyclist involved in the contact, Ineos rider Magnus Sheffield, was taken to hospital with concussion and muscle damage.
Mader turned pro in 2019 and joined Team Bahrain two years later. Two years ago, he won the sixth stage of the Giro d'Italia, and he finished on top in the classification of young drivers at the "Vuelta a España".
The last tragedy in cycling happened in 2011, when Belgian Vauter Vaillant died at the Giro d'Italia.
