Red Bull driver Max Verstappen said he won today's Formula 1 race in Spain thanks to a good start, when he overtook his opponents.

"What decided the race was the start. I took the lead and after that I was able to get ahead. After that I had to drive defensively. Lando Norris in the McLaren was very fast. I think we did everything well and I'm very happy to be here won," Verstappen said after the race in Catalunya.

The three-time champion won his seventh of the season and the 61st victory of his career.

"It was about saving the tyres. They get hot here which makes you slide a lot," added the Dutch driver.

Second place was taken by McLaren driver Lando Norris, who started from pole position.

"I should have won. I had a bad start, just bad. The car was incredible today. We were certainly the fastest. I just lost at the start. I'm disappointed but there are many positives. One negative kind of ruined everything. I know that," Norris said.

"Besides that, we won a good number of points and thanks to the team because the car was great," he added.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes finished third, his first podium finish since last October.

"It was a good day, a strong weekend. I have to thank the team because they are training so hard. The strategy and pit stops were correct. Unfortunately, I had a really bad start and I lost position to Ferrari and it was a battle to get back into position" , he said.

"With a better start... I don't know if we could keep these guys in front, but I don't think we would be far behind them," added the record holder for the number of victories in Formula 1 - 103.

The next race in the championship is on June 30 in Austria.
