Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton said that in today's race for the British Grand Prix, he wanted to win for his team Mercedes, with whom he is on the track in Silverstone for the last time, before moving to Ferrari.
"Since 2021, every day I get up and fight to train to commit to the task and work as hard as I can with this amazing team. This is my last race here with this team. I wanted a win for them so much, because I love them so much and I appreciate it," said Hamilton after the race.
At the end, Hamilton managed to maintain his advantage over current champion Max Verstappen from Red Bull and achieve his first victory since the race in Saudi Arabia in 2021.
It is his last race for Mercedes at his home track at Silverstone, as he moves to Ferrari from next season. He is the Formula 1 record holder with 104 victories.
Hamilton achieved his ninth victory at Silverstone.
"This is for all the hard work the team has put in over the years. I'm forever grateful to everyone at Mercedes and all our partners. And all our amazing fans. I could see you lap after lap. There's no better feeling than winning here," he said. is Hamilton.
He was emotional at the end of the race, breaking down in tears while receiving congratulations from the team over the radio. After getting out of the car, his father and then his mother congratulated him.
Verstappen said that the team did not have the pace, but that they made good tactics.
"At the beginning I was going down slowly and I didn't look great at one point. I thought, 'Am I going to finish fifth, sixth?' "But we made the right decisions with the tires. We did it on the right lap. In the end, the decision on the hard tires rather than the soft ones definitely helped me, and because of that, it could have been much worse." is the current champion.
McLaren driver Lando Norris took third place.
"Congratulations to Luis. That key decision at the end, he did a better job. Congratulations to him and Mercedes. It was tough. I enjoyed it and it was a fun fight with these guys. As a team, I don't think we did the job we needed to do. At the same time, I blame myself, I hate being in this position," he said.
"I'm still satisfied. I'm still enjoying it. I wish everything was perfect, but today it wasn't," added the British driver.
The next race in the championship is on July 21 for the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring.
