The chess teams of Montenegro registered victories at the start of the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest. The chess players defeated Barbados 4:0, while the female chess players with the maximum score were better than Palau. Selectors Dragan Kosić and Dušan Lekić decided on the basic squads, and the first team players did not allow any surprises. The men's team was led by the grandmaster and ten-time champion of Montenegro, Nikola Đukić, who won the material with the white pieces of Filip Korbin, after about twenty moves with a tactical strike. Đukić surely realized the gained advantage, and the front board Denis Kadrić punished the risky play of Džastin Blekman and brought the game to the winning end. Grandmasters Nikita Petrov and Luka Drašković put their signatures on the maximum triumph, who waited patiently with the black pieces for a chance that they routinely took advantage of. The ladies entered the match against Palau as the absolute favorite, and Palau played with only three players, so Nikolina Koljević came to the point without a fight. She was soon joined in the auditorium by Aleksandra Milović, who checkmated Joan Gemota after only 22 moves. The two leading boards, Aleksandra Žerebecova and Alena Skvortsova, won with routine play, so the women's national team opened the competition with a maximum victory.
