The most decorated gymnast of all time, Simone Biles, said she is not sure whether she will compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as she has other priorities and needs to listen to her body.
"I'm trying to enjoy life, spend time with my husband (Chicago Bears player Jonathan Owens), support him at his games, live life as a woman. I've accomplished so much in sports. Something would really have to excite me to come back," Biles said in an interview with the newspaper Ekip.
She said she will be at the Los Angeles Games, but that she doesn't know in what role yet.
"Whether on the apparatus or in the stands, I don't know yet. But 2028 seems so far away, and my body is getting older. I felt that in Paris," said the 28-year-old Biles.
The American won three gold medals and a silver medal at last year's Games in Paris. She has won seven gold medals so far, for a total of 11 Olympic medals.
She got sick from the exertion in Paris.
"I went back to the village, I was taking the elevator and I collapsed. I was sick for 10 days. A few days ago we were running in the garden with friends, I was in pain for three days. Honestly, I don't know. We'll see," Biles said.
She praised rival Rebeca Andrade of Brazil for recovering from injury and for "pushing her to push the boundaries," but said gymnastics no longer needs both.
"It only takes one of us, right? Especially since Andrade won't be alone. The younger generation is knocking on the door and it's going to start all over again," Biles said.
Whatever she decides about her career, Biles said she will continue to speak out about mental health.
"I am very proud of the work that has been done to get to this point and I will continue to be a voice for the voiceless," Biles said.
